Where the Buffalo Grass Once Waved

from Diane Arkenstone

The prairies lay bare, but all is not lost
There is life among what was, but will never be again
I am the spirit in being, I am yesterday, today and eternity
We are all one, the cool sweet, running spring
Otters at play with life, white billowy clouds dancing with the sun
And stars in the night sky, like crystals shimmering down from the heavens

It has been more than a century since smoke has risen up from the teepee
Women at work over a cook fire and buffalo hide
Children crying out playfully, dogs lying underfoot by the shade of a teepee
And men, proud and noble hunters, who feel as one with the Great Spirit
Nothing was killed or taken needlessly, a deer in the forest, a fish in the stream
All was hunted so another life could continue. Man and nature, the balance was sacred

Things are not as they were, I dare not ponder too much for it saddens the soul
There is a little sadness in the eyes of all
The prairie dog, the wide-eyed deer, the owl and the eagle, even the snowfall,
Until then, memories will stir in the hearts of all, bittersweet and distant
Longing to be living and breathing among the forgotten, where the buffalo grass once waved.

Backstory: I started writing poems, songs and stories at 3 years old and it continues today. I wrote this poem when I was auditioning for bands as a singer and was sleeping on the floor of a cheap apartment I rented because I had no money for furniture and barely any for food. Those were the good old days.
